Hot Gas and Dark Matter in the Halos of Early type Galaxies
Abstract
Einstein and ROSAT X-ray observations showed that luminous early-type galaxies have extended hot coronae and dark matter halos With Chandra we examined a sample of 160 early-type galaxies After excluding detected X-ray point sources we can determine from the X-ray spectrum the contribution from unresolved point sources to the emission For galaxies where the emission from hot gas is the dominant component we determine the gas mass and the extent and mass of dark matter in the galaxy halo
